The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the global forum for intellectual property (IP) services, policy, information and cooperation.  WIPO is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 191 member states.  WIPO’s mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective intellectual property system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.

WIPO dates back to 1893 when the secretariats of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (covering patents, trademarks and industrial designs) and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (covering copyright) combined to form the United International Bureaux for the Protection of Intellectual Property (BIRPI, in the French acronym).  BIRPI became WIPO in 1970, and in 1974 WIPO became a specialized agency of the United Nations, administering today 26 international treaties, with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and external offices in Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and Singapore.

WIPO provides:

  • A policy forum to shape balanced international IP rules
  • Global services to protect IP via filing systems for, e.g., patents, trademarks and industrial designs
  • Technical infrastructure to connect IP systems and share knowledge
  • Cooperation and capacity-building programs to enable all countries to use IP for economic, social and cultural development
  • A world reference source for IP information.

As official languages, WIPO has the 6 official languages of the United Nations, namely Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, with German, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese being additional official languages under the WIPO-administered Patent Cooperation Treaty.  The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FIT and WIPO aims to establish cooperation especially in light of the shared acknowledgement of the importance of multilingualism in the field of IP, and the desire to promote quality and professionalism in translation, interpreting and terminology, including training and education in these fields.
